One night, a man named Craig approached a kind stranger at a gas station. With a heavy speech impediment and clear signs of distress, he struggled to ask for help.
He had been dropped off in the middle of a thunderstorm, alone, hungry, and afraid, with nowhere to go.
Thanks to the patience and compassion of that stranger, Craig was gently encouraged to share his story. He’s lived with a learning disability and anxiety for most of his life, and though it was hard for him to speak up, he showed incredible courage and humility.
That caring stranger called City Union Mission’s Men’s Shelter. Someone answered on the first ring.
By morning, Craig was safely dropped off and welcomed in. He was given a bed, a meal, and something even more powerful: a chance.
Craig called later that day to say thank you, still overwhelmed by the newness of it all, but deeply grateful.
We are too.
To everyone who sees those in need and stops to listen, support, and guide them to safety, thank you.
To every supporter who makes it possible for us to say “yes” when someone like Craig walks through our doors, you are the reason hope lives here.
